Basics of auto-recloser function settings

Auto-reclosing means a coordinated de-energization and re-energization of overhead lines (both transmission and distribution). Its purpose is to clear transient and semi-permanent fault causes from the line and automatically restore the supply to the line. This quick guide will present a typical auto-recloser configuration. For a more detailed description of the function please refer to IED manual.

Setup object for auto-recloser

Auto-recloser uses object function to close and open the breaker. At least one circuit breaker object has to be configured to make use of auto-recloser function. Check the guide for configuring an object LINK HERE.

General settings

Enable auto-recloser function at Control > Controls enabled. After this you will find auto-recloser at Controls > Control functions. In the INFO page scroll down to get to General settings. Choose which circuit breaker object auto-recloser controls, enable AR in SG (setting group), choose if auto-recloser requires manual resetting after it is locked or if breaker closing resets.

Request settings

To start up an auto-recloser sequence it needs to receive signals that trigger it. Below General settings are Request settings. Here at far left of each request is Edit tool which is used to define the signals that start the sequence. Typically TRIP signals are used to do this.

Request shot settings

Enable at least one shot for the request. Then set dead time delay. Dead time delay defines how long breaker is kept open after tripping the breaker before giving close command for the breaker. Set shot reclaim time. Reclaim time defines how long after closing the breaker after a trip does the breaker need to be closed without another trip before auto-recloser resets back to starting point (which is considered successful auto-reclosing). If another TRIP signal occurs after closing the breaker before reclaim time has run out auto-recloser will move to the next shot. If there is no shot following the current one, final trip is generated and breaker will stay open. Typical setting in Finland is the following.

With these settings I>, I>> and I0dir> stage TRIP signal triggers first shot of request 1. After breaker has been open for 0.4 seconds breaker is closed again by the function and reclaim countdown starts to run. If during these 10 seconds another trip occurs the function will continue to next shot and keep the breaker open for 60 seconds before breaker is closed again.

If different auto-recloser timings (dead times and reclaim times) are used for different protection function trips, previously described process can be repeated for request 2, 3, 4 and 5.
